Building an accessible world together
Welcome to the Be My Eyes Foundation, an organization that ensures that the pioneering work of accessibility innovators like Be My Eyes will continue – and accelerate – deep into the future. Our audacious mission is to design, promote and disseminate life-transforming accessibility tools to the world’s 340 million people who are blind or have low vision.
Key to our mission is that we will never charge the individual blind user for the latest access technology, software or networks. With the overwhelming majority of blind people living lives of poverty, we never will put accessibility behind a paywall. Accessibility, we believe, is a human right.
Our funding priorities
The Be My Eyes Foundation was formed to harness individual and corporate philanthropy to spur progress in six key initial areas. Broadly speaking, these include:
- Greater outreach into the global south where most of the world’s 340 million blind people live, including supporting more languages for AI and volunteering.
- Increasing the usability and simplicity of remote visual interpretation apps so that beginners and those without local blindness agencies can use these apps more fully, including those who are Deaf-blind or have intersecting disabilities.
- Expanding new ways global volunteers can serve blind people by utilizing their specialized knowledge and expertise. We intend to fund more-transformative and lengthier remote volunteer assistance to address unmet blindness needs.
- Support new ways in which blind people themselves can mentor, train or assist other blind people in school, life, work and play.
- Fund emerging technical solutions which will address key barriers the blind now face in travel, work, document reading, independent living and access to culture.
- Ensure future AI services and compute costs will not result in blind individuals needing to pay for accessibility. Ever.
The Be My Eyes Foundation is now building an endowment sufficient to fund its mission. At this time we anticipate publishing our priorities and accepting funding proposals beginning in early 2027. Expanding remote visual assistance worldwide
The Be My Eyes Foundation helps fund a gigantic system of providing visual description to more than 1 million blind people in over 150 countries speaking more than 180 languages. We support the Be My Eyes network which links more than 10 million volunteers through smartphones to provide helpful descriptions 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. All without charge.
